Snapchat’s My AI chatbot recently had a pretty strange hiccup that left users scratching their heads. You see, this AI buddy, which is supposed to make your Snapchat Plus experience smoother, has been acting up since it first came out in February. And this time, it did something really unexpected: it started posting super short Stories on users’ feeds. The weird thing is, My AI isn’t supposed to be able to do that.
So, what happened? Well, as TechCrunch first reported, the My AI chatbot dropped a two-tone image into Stories. One user even thought it was just a random shot of their ceiling. When people asked the chatbot about this mysterious post, it either stayed silent or claimed it had a technical problem. This left a lot of folks on Twitter joking about the AI taking over the world.
But, the truth is, it was just a glitch. A spokesperson explained to TechCrunch that “My AI experienced a temporary outage that’s now resolved.” They also made it clear that My AI doesn’t actually have a Stories feature.
My AI comes as part of Snapchat’s N235 / month Snapchat Plus package. It’s supposed to do all sorts of things like suggesting cool AR filters, recommending restaurants and activities based on what’s popular on the Snap Map, and helping out in group chats, with photos and videos, and in text messages. It even has its own AI personality. They’re also working on a text-to-image gen AI, although they’ve already started rolling out some ads for it. So, despite the hiccup, My AI is still here to make your Snapchat experience more interesting.
